Winter Retreat Registration is Here!

This past month we opened registration for our Summer Mission Trip to Yakima (The Yak). We opened it this early because we like having monthly meetings leading up to our trip to build up our team.

A few weeks ago we had the chance to move up our Winter Retreat from the beginning of March to the beginning of February! We jumped at the opportunity though we realize that it does put many families in a tight place financially.

One thing that we would like to do to help is simply combining the deposits of the two trips making them $100 to sign up for both instead of $140. We’ll be making up the difference with additional fund raising opportunities this coming year for our mission trip.

We’d also want to remind everyone of our scholarship fund. Forms can be found at the Youth Pod (room 106) or online at hccfuel.com. Our church is very gracious and understands the value of sending our students on these trips and want nothing more then to see them attend!

Please Contact me with any thoughts or questions! - Jen Easton

We still have spots open for our Summer Mission Trip to Yakima this year (The Yak). Forms can also be found at church or online as well.

Finally, we want your kids to come on these trips so please contact me if there is anything we can do to make that happen! We still have money in our Scholarship Fund for this year as well, but please contact me soon!

Roadtrip 2 Nowhere!

That's right, we're bringing it back!
Time for our Youth Group to do another Green Screen Roadtrip to some amazing locations (without even leaving our building!). We'll take our group pictures and photoshop them in locations all over the world!

Some of the locations we're looking at this year are:
  1. Running of the Bulls
  2. Old Faithful
  3. Stonehenge
  4. Mt. Rushmore
Among others...shoot, we may even go visit the largest ball of yarn!

Bring some costumes, bring some friends and get ready to fill your photo album and update your facebook page!

Then the following week will be our last gathering this year (Dec. 16th) and will be Guys and Girls Christmas Parties. Places and info to be announced later so check back soon!

Also our Mission Trip Registration is still being accepted (The Yak forms can be found on our website) and our Winter Retreat has moved up from mid-March to the first weekend of February!

Thanksgiving Eve Service and Unofficial Movie Night!

Instead of Youth Group this Wednesday, we encourage everyone to bring friends and family to our Thanksgiving Eve Service at the Church from 7-8pm-ish.

Afterwards we have our annual, "Unofficial Movie Night" where we let you know what movie a bunch of us are going to at Galaxy and if you can make it, Great! (It's "unofficial" because we don't buy tickets for you or organize rides...though we really want to see you there!)

In past years we've had over 100 people associated with our church/youth group there (students, friends, family, returning college students).

The movie this year is Planet 51 at Galaxy Uptown at 9:30pm.

That'll give you about an hour or so after the service to get there and buy a ticket.

It's a blast, so don't miss either!

Monday, November 16, 2009

Mass Hangout!

Mass Hangout is this Wednesday, so bring your friends for a evening of fun and games!

Our mission trip registration is out so grab a copy or click on the links on our website to download them!

Small Groups have started so jump into one and hang out with us!

Next week instead of youth group we invite you and your family to go to our church's Thanksgiving Eve service beginning at 7pm that Wednesday. It's a relaxed and short, one hour service. Then afterwards our youth group will be going to watch Planet 51 at the Galaxy Theater! We call it our "unofficial movie night" because we don't buy your tickets, or organize rides to and from, though we may save you a seat...If you've never been to a movie with 100 people you know, then you haven't experienced anything yet!

The Yak Registration!

Here's this Summer's Mission Trip Registration form! We currently have 16 of the 18 spots still available. Registration officially ends January 6th but it is first come first served. Once spots are filled, we will have a waiting list.

One of our fundraising activities are going on right now and actually ends THIS Sunday! We are selling red poinsettia's. Poinsettia forms are linked on the right hand side of our website www.hccfuel.com, directly above the form is a print link!

And here are those direct links:

Pizza & Praise!

That's right, first of the year so don't miss it!

Bring $3 ($1 goes to our compassion child, Bhuva and the other $2 goes to dinner) and any first time friends wouldn't have to pay of course!

We'll have dinner together for the first half of the night and finish off by lifting our God up in song!

And be thinking about who to invite for tomorrow and for Mass Hangout next week!

In other news:

This is the last week to sell Poinsettias for our mission trip fundraiser (Registration forms will be available tomorrow as well) so get on it!

Bible Studies have started up, Girls meet before youth group from 4:45-:5:43pm and guys meet afterwards from 7:30-8:30pm.

And if you're an 8th grader in Confirmation Class, don't forget to do your homework interviews!

See you tomorrow!

And don't forget that our first fund raising opportunity has started! Forms can be picked up at the youth pod (room 106 in the Ed. Building).

Mass Hangout!

Since you attended Staff Q&A night and have been able to get to know us a little better, what better way to celebrate then a night of games and hanging out?!

That's right, the first Mass Hangout of the year! We have this night set up as a "no pressure" night to bring friends and have fun. We understand that sometimes inviting friends can be difficult if you don't know what the talk will be on or if there will be singing, etc. So every month or so we'll do one of these nights so that you and your friends have an opportunity to hang out with our awesome leaders and maybe make it easier to bring friends back to youth group later.

We'll be playing games (like Three-Legged-Half-Blinded-Beachball-Soccer-Madness!) but also have some downtime to just hang with our leaders and get to know them by playing and talking together. You can even ask them questions from last week that you still want answered!

The following week will be our first IIT316 night. That stands for 2 Timothy 3:16, and we start the night off with some games and finish by diving into a passage out of the Bible to see how it applies to our everyday life! So don't forget to bring a friend and your Bible! (Don't have a Bible? We have some brand new ones here you and your friends can have, just ask!)

And don't forget to sign up for the Fall Retreat! The discounted price has passed but it's still worth it to sign up! Plus we have scholarships for anyone who needs them so please don't let money be the reason why you don't go! (To request a scholarship, just grab a Scholarship Form at youth group/Sunday School or outside the Youth Pod (room 106) OR print one up from the download link on our webpage (www.hccfuel.com).

Hello from LA!

Mike, Heather, Rachel and I are just finishing our weekend at the
National Youth Workers Conference. We received lots of encouragement
and ideas on how to better focus our ministry. Wonder where God will
take us this year!

Onto this Wednesday, we have Staff Q&A night from 5:43-7:15pm! We've
been collecting questions for the last few weeks for our youth staff
to be answering amongst playing a bunch of games. So gear up for some
fun and laughs and don't forget to bring your friends!

Also it's not too late to ask some questions, you can email or
Facebook me today and tomorrow if you'd like your question to make the
list. And remember, these questions can be about anything and we'll
answer them as honestly as we can! See you then!

Also remember that this is the last week to sign up for the Fall
Retreat (It's at the end of October) to get the discounted early fee,
and as always scholarships are available.

Today!

Today we are having our, "What's in a Name?" night. We'll play some games and talk about why we call our Middle School Youth Group, "Fuel." So make sure you're here from 5:43-7:15pm tonight for some fun!

Also remember to be coming up with questions to ask for next weeks Volunteer Staff Q&A Night! You ask us any question you want and we'll answer it as honestly as we can! And don't forget about Fall Retreat registration forms! You can pick them up here (and online soon) and drop them off in the drop box outside the Youth Pod (room 106).

We've been having some computer issues around the church but I managed to get the videos of our summer trips up online:

You might notice that they're on Vimeo and not on Youtube and that is because they kept muting the videos because of the music - but here they are in all their glory!

Pac Nite XII!!!

That's right folks!

Our annual Pac Nite is back and it's 12 years old!

This is how we kick off every year! So come on down this Wednesday from 5:43-7:15pm to have a blast!

Bring your friends because it'll be guys against girls as we battle to see how much of you we can cram into and onto things! How many middle schoolers can fit into a hula hoop? How about a fridge box? Ever hear of our infamous Maytag Relay? Ever hear of a game show called "hole in the wall?"

But why guess when you can just come and find out! But bring your friends or they may never forgive you for leaving them out!

Then next week we'll play some games and talk about why we call our Middle School youth group, "Fuel."

See you Wednesday!

Parent Meeting

So we are having a Parent Meeting at 6:30pm today at the church.

We hope you can make it!

One of the things we will be talking about is how everyone can enter their email address in the box on the right and have all of these posts emailed to them. What's great about that is that you won't have to keep checking back to see if we've updated and only need to check your email inbox!

The only catch will be that you will receive an email asking you to confirm that you wanted to subscribe. So please keep on the lookout for that email and click on the link inside!

And we have our first youth group this Wednesday night from 5:43 - 7:15pm, it's our annual Pac Nite XII where we pack our students into things! Simple, and fun so make sure they bring friends!

Leaving Gleanings

Though my thoughts aren't exactly shared by the whole staff, I thought this week went by really fast. I think a big part was how we spent a few days doing new jobs (like making soup mix) available that they usually don't have so late into the summer.

What was really cool was how our group not only set a new record for processing bins of fruit, we also were able to package over 600,000 8oz servings of soup mix.

Last night we split into 3 groups and went on a prayer walk around the Gleanings campus. It was a neat way to close the week.

If you haven't noticed we've been twittering our trip as well. I probably should have explained that earlier but better late then never, right?

If you're curious what "Twitter" is, it's essentially mini blogging. Why people use Twitter over things like this blog is because it can easily be updated by a phone via text message which makes it much easier and quicker to post. The only limitation is that each post is limited to 160 characters so messages need to be concise.

If you want to read them, it's anchored on the top right of our web page www.hccfuel.com. They can also be texted straight to your phone if you want (ask a teenager how).

You'll also notice that there are often links posted to them as well. The ones from yfrog.com are links to photos of students and the links from bit.ly will bring up a map with our current location. (This could prove useful come Monday.)

*for some reason I can't edit the and add this to the bottom of the page. But I was just going to say that we probably won't have much in the way of cell service at our campsite but we will post as soon as we do (which might be Monday). Though in lew of cell service I anticipate some awesome stars the next two nights!

Anyhoo, we're eating dinner in Yreka right now, and I'm not so sure how well our cell phone reception will be at he camp site.

Life of Mike

Yesterday was one of those days that make my heart smile. The work day was long and hard but At the end of the day we had processed more fruit than any other group had processed all summer. I am convinced it was because our group was on the job. On numerous occassions I found myself working a portion of the line between some high school kids from another group and a couple of our middle school kids and our kids totally outworked the older kids. Parents, your kids are working hard.
After a hards day work we hit the pool for some water polo. I played on the girls team but I don't think they really needed me because the girls destroyed the boys. The highlight for the guys was luke's length of the pool shot right past my balding head!
But if I had to pick the best part of the day I'd have to choose the evening. We finished the day by spending a little solo time in the peach fields. I shared with the students that God is constantly calling out to his children but we're often to distracted to hear his gentle whisper. The students then simply went for a quiet prayer walk and listened to the whispers. When they returned they shared what they heard - "stop wandering on the rocky road and walk on the smooth trail" - "let go" - "I care about you" - "keep your focus on me". I then encouraged the students to take a chance a go on more prayers walks...and they did! Ten students got up (on their own) at 5:25am and went on a prayer walk. When I got up for my quiet time they were coming back from their time of prayer.
Like I said, it was a great day... We worked hard, played hard, and prayed hard..... Now I need a nap!

Our First Work Day!

Two days and 930 miles later, we finally made it. But those two days on the road were nothing compared to our first day of work!

Our students were eating breakfast by 6:45am! After a morning worship service and a tour of the facility, we were off and running. We had students working on the machines, out in the field, and even packing soup mix (a first for us).

We finished by 4:30pm and then we all headed for the pool! Tonight they are going to spend some time explaining what they do during the Mission Moment.

-Jen Easton

Here's one of our Shepherds (student leader):

Today was our first full day of work! My favorite station was probably the inspection line aka slime line, that's where we pick out all the rotten fruit. Everyone was singing and playing games as we worked. I'd say today was great first time experience!

Summer Hangout tomorrow and Gleanings packing list!

So we'll be at the Hailey and Hannah's house tomorrow from 6-7:15pm. Directions to their house out in Purdy will be posted later today so head back to www.hccfuel.com for those. We'll cook some hot dogs and hopefully (weather permitting) will have fun playing outside and have a short message at the end (so bring your Bible!)

Here is a digital version of the Gleanings Packing List: If there are any questions, please contact Jen Easton immediately!

Some common questions have been:
  • Will there be an itinerary for parents with contact info and where everyone will be including info on the debrief? Yes, one will be provided Saturday morning so be sure to pick one up!
  • Do they need a "Camel Pak" (backpack water "bottle")? No, but they will need at least a water bottle. Camel Paks are only suggested because they tend to keep students better hydrated in the hot weather because they have it with them more often.
  • Can students bring a cell phone? Yes but we ask that they are left with adult leaders to eliminate distractions on the trip.
  • Will only adults be driving? ABSOLUTELY!!! Our drivers will include Mike Stelle, Chris Johnson (Hailey and Hannah's dad), myself and my beautiful wife Rachel. Dan Brinkman will meet us at the debrief and help us drive students home on the 20th. (FYI: We never let any of our students be driven on our trips by anyone under the age of 25.)
  • I heard something about Washers and Dryers? YES! They have washers and dryers there and we will use them! So please consider that as you pack because space will be tight for 25 pieces of luggage.
Here is the packing list, to print, simply click on "More" and download it to your computer.

Today we will be talking about how to finish the school year well.

And we'll finish the night working in our groups figuring out the details of our Trike's for the Trike Race June 10th!

Don't forget that next week we'll be with the high schoolers at a combined Youth Group at the City Park @ 6pm!

Mass Hangout and some technical stuff...

Hey all!

We are changing a few things with how we run this blog.  Instead of having the address forwarded to www.hccfuel.blogspot.com when you type in www.hccfuel.com, we're going to be changing it to simply www.hccfuel.com.

How does this affect you?  If you've bookmarked/favorited our webpage (we hope you did!) then and it doesn't automatically change for you, this is why.  Otherwise, just take note of it!

And it may take a few days for everything to get ironed out.

So let's cover what's going on next week!

It will be MASS HANGOUT!

So students, bring some friends because we're going to be playing games all night!

Also if you are considering going on our summer camp or mission trip, sign ups are filling up!  Please let me know if you are interested!

FREE MOVIE NIGHT!

Are you ready?!

Do you have your seat reserved for the movie tomorrow?

As of this moment we have 14 free seats left for our free movie night at Galaxy Theaters!  All the rest have been reserved with a $5 deposit that will be given back at the theater.

If you still want to reserve your spot, tomorrow afternoon you can swing by the church to sign up (call ahead to make sure we are there).  Otherwise you better not be late!  All remaining seats will be given out, first come - first served!  After those seats are gone you may buy a discounted ticket for $7 cash.  (Which would still be worth it!)

We are watching Monsters VS. Aliens (The 3D movie) at the Galaxy Theaters in Gig Harbor.  Be there by 6pm (with an 8pm pick up time) and grab your raffle ticket (for all the prizes we're giving out!) and get ready to have some fun!

Just so we are clear, we are taking both our High School and Middle School youth groups out to the movies tomorrow!  "Regular" youth group will resume at it's normal time and place next week (with Jr. High having Pizza & Praise!).

Invite a friend so we can fill those spots!

Movie Night!

So This Wednesday we are taking you all out to the movies!

Of course to make sure that all the seats are filled we'd like you all to sign up before Wednesday...

Here's the deal.  A cool person donated 75 seats to our youth groups (Middle School and High School) to see any movie we wanted at the Gig Harbor Galaxy Theater!

So THIS WEDNESDAY at 6PM we will be meeting AT GALAXY THEATERS for our own private viewing of MONSTERS VS. ALIENS!!!  It will be 3D and there will be tons of raffle prizes given away!  You and your friends will want to be there!

We've been collecting a $5 deposit for those that want to secure a seat (which we will give back when you show up at the theater).  If you're name isn't on that list, then it is first come first served until we are out of free seats (currently we have less then 20 remaining).  After all the free seats are spoken for, they will allow our group to purchase up to 20 seats at $7 a ticket (cash) if you'd rather go that route!

If you have any questions, just give me a call here at the church or shoot me an email (851-8450, jeaston-at-harborcovenant.org).

6 o'clock!  Don't be late!  Pick up time will be at 8pm.

Easter Wednesday

Bunny's?

Eggs?

What do these things have to do with, "Easter?"

Come play with us and lets find out!

(And just maybe we'll have a visit by the Easter Bunny himself!)

Normal time tonight with next week being our Free Movie Night (Monsters vs Aliens @ 6pm) AT the Galaxy Theaters.  To reserve your spot, bring a $5 deposit when you sign up (which will be given back to you at the theater).  Or leftover spots will be first come first served at the Galaxy (here in Gig Harbor)!  We have only 70 spots to give away!

This Week!

It being "Spring" Break and all, we are changing things up a little.

Tuesday Afternoon (weather permitting) Rachel will be taking a group out to see some baby goats!  (More info coming but it's currently looking to be around 1pm.)  If you are interested just send me an email at jeaston at harborcovenant.org or give Rachel or I a call.

Wednesday from 6-7:30pm we will be bringing back "Hoonting"!  If you don't know what that is, we essentially play blowdart tag with safety goggles, pvc pipes and hand made paper cone darts.  I know you must be saying to yourself, "what are they thinking?"  But that must only be because you have never tried it!  Lots of fun to be had so come on down!

And Thursday from 12-1:30pm we will be doing a Frisbee Disc Golf Clinic and Tournament.  If you are interested in learning how to play or even just to pick up some tips on how to chuck a frisbee, then you need to be here!  Come on out to learn how to play on a course here at church that jr and sr highers have been playing on for nearly 10 years!  If you have a frisbee, bring it and if you don't, no worries!  We got you covered!

If you want to do something else this week, give one of your leaders a call!

----Free Movie Info----

Now we originally were planning to watch a movie Tuesday night but let me give you some background about that first.  A very nice person at our church won in an auction 75 tickets to see a movie at the new Galaxy Theaters here in Gig Harbor and promptly donated it to the youth group!  We tried to set up a night this week but found it to be too difficult.

The new plan is to watch the new Dreamworks movie Monsters Vs. Aliens an April 15th around 6pm.  Since that is on Wednesday night, this will be instead of Youth Group!  We will be requiring students to sign up WITH a $5 deposit (which we will give back to you at the movie) to make sure that every seat is filled and no one is turned away that wanted to go.

Sign up lists will be at each youth event this week (or you can drop off your deposit with your name at the front office) so make sure your name gets on that list!

I will also be adding the Summer Camp (Camp Spalding) and Mission Trip (Gleanings) forms up online tomorrow!
